Originating from the South American Andes, a quipu, also spelled khipu, qipu or kipu, is an intricate system of knotted strings of various colors that store and convey information. It comes from the native Quechua language that means “talking knots.” These talking knots were used as recording devices for things such as taxes, census data, and even military calculations.
The Quipu usage dates as far back as 2600 BCE up until 1532 CE and was very effective as a universal method of communication between groups across the region that spoke different languages.
